Monolithic S-band Multichannel Transmit/Receive Module for Communication Phased Array Antennas
Phased array antennas have demonstrated the high performance and operability required for communication and surveillance applications. However, the acquisition cost of active phased array antennas is the single most significant factor impeding their wide application in both military and commercial applications.
This SBIR effort focuses on significant cost reduction of T/R modules by incorporating highly integrated MMIC components interfaced with a microcontroller for control and monitoring. Reduced component count is central to substantial reduction in size, weight and cost, while improving unit-to-unit uniformity and extending reliability.
The full-duplex, multi-channel, S-band T/R module will support multiple concurrent communication links capable of transmitting and receiving multiple beams simultaneously. An RF section featuring advanced, dual-chip MMIC technology will replace the large number of discrete RF components in existing systems, and an integrated command microcontroller will provide internal protection and built-in test capability.
Design of the module will include interconnection and distribution circuits, as well as, the mechanical and thermal configuration. The anticipated advantages of this approach are size, weight, and cost reduction and maximized manufacturability, reproducibility, flexibility, and ease of replacement.
Optimization Priorities:
- Low Cost
- Full-duplex T/R capability
- Size
Balanced Solution:
Design and deliver a low-cost, full-duplex T/R module at S-band. Tight integration of components will drive down size and cost for large phased array systems.
