President's Corner: AFCEA West 2012 Observations

Last month, I attended AFCEA West. The convention was co-sponsored by AFCEA International and the U.S. Naval Institute. AFCEA West is touted to be the largest event on the west coast for military focused communications, electronics, intelligence, information systems, imaging, military weapon systems, etc.

It was held in San Diego Convention Center with lots of fine dining a short walk away in the Gaslamp District. The weather, of course, was beautiful. Hey, it was San Diego!

The conference’s theme this year was America’s Military at the Crossroads: “What’s Out and What’s In for 2012 and Beyond?”

I spent much of my two days at the conference, mostly listening to presentations and talking with people, trying to get a sense of what’s happening in these challenging economic times. For me, two highlight presentations were Vice Admiral William E. Gortney, who delivered the opening keynote address and Brigadier General Michael E. Williamson, who gave a JTRS update in the SPAWAR booth. I was able to talk briefly with the Brigadier General after his presentation. He is very impressive. He grew up in Maine and is a big Pats fan. But I digress…

The principal technical point I heard and I heard it many times and in many ways, but all similar…the communication spectrum is severely crowded. So terms like “spectral efficiency,” “spectral purity,” and “spectral clarity” were omnipresent. The last two seem to be used interchangeably. Since the military, with a clear goal of communications dominance, needs to make the very most of the available spectrum, having technical excellence in this area is paramount. Hearing the emphasis on optimizing the spectrum gives me comfort as Auriga’s CEO, because we are very clearly focused on linearity – and that is key to solving this challenge.

I am always impressed by the quality of our DoD leadership. Their straightforward and forthright communication shows their command of the issues and demonstrates their passionate commitment to the defense of our country. Overall, I felt AFCEA West was an extremely valuable event …and I plan to attend next year as well.
